Sciatic Treatment: The Steps You Can Take
I don’t have to point out just how debilitating sciatic pain can be, to anyone suffering the consequences of this condition. I know first hand how disabling it is, and how hard it is to find relief from the pain. However, it’s not just the pain, that’s where it starts. It’s the burning sensation, the numbness, the pins-and-needles in the muscles, and overall feeling of weakness…
As I have previously mentioned, surgery is an option. But it works for only a very few who try it. So is there another option for a sciatica treatment? I created this blog to provide guidance on exactly that, the home remedies and steps a person can implement to naturally alleviate their pain. You have to consider these sciatica treatments, if you really want to get to the root cause of your problems.
Using Ice & Heat
Proper use of both ice and heat can be effective methods to relieve sciatic pain. Ice is regarded as the superior option as it works to reduce inflammation to the affected areas. Applying cold or ice to the site of pain works best if you apply it within two days of the onset or flare-up.
Later in treatment, compressing a heating pad on the tight lower back muscles will relieve the strain. However you do have to be careful here, as too much heat too quickly, can actually exacerbate the problem. It may cause excess and additional irritation. So try to use heat solely to treat tightness in the muscles, and NOT at the site of the pain.
Stretching Is A Great Way To Reduce Symptoms
Stretching is also very effective in the treatment of sciatic pain. It’s usually the piriformis muscle which spasms within the buttock region, that can irritate the sciatic nerve. Lying on one’s back and rolling the trunk muscles toward the unaffected side, stretches the muscle. Placing a tennis ball just under the tight muscle and bearing weight on it for around 60 seconds, also releases the contracting piriformis.
Treating sciatica from home requires attention to body positioning in general. In some cases it is much more painful to remain seated than it is to stand. If a particular posture causes excess pain, limit such activity. In addition to this, do not rely exclusively upon the comfort of a chair or bed. Make use of pillows to support your hips and lower back if necessary.
Good sciatic treatment also includes moving around. Less-active muscles tighten and become increasingly more difficult to use. In fact, being immobile will only exacerbate your pain. Be sure to limit the amount of time you spend lying in bed. I know from experience, that this is all you will want to do at times. But slow your pace if you have to, but do not stop!
Anti-Inflammatory Pain Medications
Anti-inflammatory meds certainly do aid sciatica pain relief at home. These over-the-counter drugs target the swollen irritated muscle tissue causing your symptoms. Taken as directed, they can enable you to remain more mobile, and better prepared to benefit from additional sciatic treatment options.
However, always remember that this is only a treatment to mask pain and symptoms – to help you get through the day. To really attain long term relief from your sciatica issues, you need to address the root cause of your problems with a combination of treatments I suggest within this blog.
